The Operation Round Up Board of Directors initiated a program offering small, $500 grants to teachers. Grants were available to K-12 teachers in art and science for the 2018-2019 school year. The funds are made available by South Plains Electric Cooperative members contributing to Operation Round Up. Their monthly bill is rounded up to the next dollar, and the extra change, averaging only $6 per year, funds projects like the teacher mini-grants, scholarships and much more.

Rose Duncan is the choir teacher at Frenship Middle School and is a 2018-2019 Operation Round Up Mini-Grant recipient. Duncan purchased a wireless microphone with the mini-grant.

“Frenship Middle School has a great deal of musical talent, but is hindered in performances due to the lack of adequate wireless mics,” Duncan said. “For individuals to learn how to project their voices, a wireless mic allows for balance and mixing of voices so that individuals with smaller voices can be heard.”

Duncan said students must learn how to project for a microphone to properly enhance their sound, and a wireless mic assists with diction and inflections since they provide instant feedback. In addition, Duncan incorporates the wireless mic daily because they do not impede choreography and allow the students to focus on their voice and performance.

“It is my dream to develop a performing ensemble which will provide these younger musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills,” Duncan said. “Thank you, South Plains Electric Cooperative, for making this possible!” Click here to learn more.
