Concern for community is one of the Seven Cooperative Principles South Plains Electric Cooperative follows to bolster their efforts to give back. Operation Round Up and its board of directors created a mini-grant program that supports local teachers and helps fund classroom projects or educational field trips. This program is just one of the many ways SPEC supports the community to enhance the lives of members and their families.
Casey Mayo is a 4th grade math teacher at Ralls Elementary who received a teacher mini-grant. Students gain a better understanding of the lessons they are being taught through materials they can hold, which is why Mayo used her grant to purchase manipulatives, charts, flashcards and several other hand-held learning tools.
Additionally, since most of their curriculum is facilitated through a computerized form, Mayo bought a bulk order of headphones for her students to have while using computers.
Having these aids for her students not only makes a huge difference in their knowledge retention, but it also eases the burden on the students by not having to purchase these items themselves. Mayo is grateful to have received a teacher mini-grant, as it allowed her to provide all of her math students with the tools necessary to make learning easier and more fun.
