Out With The Old and In With The New
Tuesday | July 6, 2021

The Operation Round Up Board of Directors created a mini-grant program to help teachers with classroom projects or educational field trips. Operation Round Up approved another three-year cycle of teacher mini-grants.

Nineteen teachers received grants for their reading or social studies classroom projects for the 2020-2021 school year.

Lora Saso is a reading and language arts teacher at Heritage Middle School and is a 2020-2021 Operation Round Up Mini-Grant recipient.

Saso has taught the classic ‘The Outsiders’ for the past four years. The set of books the students used had been lovingly used and read for approximately eight years by over 2,000 students.  “You can imagine the condition these books are in at this point,” Saso said. “Many have been glued and taped but still look as ragged as a Greaser after a rumble! I wanted all my students to know how a new copy of a book feels in their hands and not feel like they missed being the ‘first’ to use a book.” Once Saso received the new books, she took them to the school librarian where they were professionally covered so that students could enjoy them for years to come.

Thank you so much, South Plains Electric and Operation Round Up!
