Concern for Community is one of the Seven Cooperative Principles guiding South Plains Electric Cooperative. Giving back to our community gives our Cooperative the opportunity to support community efforts that enhance the quality of life for members and their families. Operation Round Up helps provide funding for community members in need.
Operation Round Up is funded by Cooperative members rounding their bill up to the nearest dollar.
Robert Gentry, an environmental science teacher at Frenship High School, was a recipient of a 2023 Operation Round Up Teacher Mini-Grant.
Gentry and his students enhanced their love for environmental science using the grant. Gentry purchased two devices his students used to complete research and collect data needed to suggest environmentally friendly changes to their campus.
Students used devices to download data for individual analysis and dissemination in reports the students design themselves. This project allowed students to become familiar with the devices, practice their research and data-collecting skills, and become familiar with environmental changes that can occur around their school.
The first of the purchased devices was a PocketLab Air Climate Sensor. This device allowed students to investigate air quality and produce research-quality results. The second device was a PocketLab Voyager 2, which allowed students to collect detailed information on motion, orientation, altitude, light and magnetic fields.
